New homes or relatively new homes with a stucco chimney
or stucco exterior walls above the shingle roofing. Many times there are
staples, pin holes and cracked shingles below the stucco areas. Builders typically install
the roof shingles first to make the house water tight. Stucco contractors
cover the roofing shingles with felt paper to protect the shingles from cement staining
and damage. The felt paper is then stapled through the shingles, to hold the paper on the
roof. The staples damage the roof shingle and allow for premature deterioration and
leaking. Stapling through the shingles faces also voids the shingle
manufacturers warranty. The shingles should be replaced when this condition is
present, as the shingles are damaged, will be considered undependable and will have a
reduced life expectancy.
Procedures for preventing this condition:
| Install a roll roofing material over the shingles and under the ridge cap, under the ridge vent, under an upper row of shingles, and/or under the flashings. The roll roofing can the be removed after the stucco is completed. | |||
| Install a painters tarp over the roof to protect the shingles. | |||
| Provide a 2 x 4 frame with plywood nailed to the 2 x 4s and have the 2 x 4s properly secured over the ridge of the roof to hold the frame in place. | |||
| Stucco the walls prior to the installation of the roof shingles. |
